Tizu Valley Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Network

Tizu Valley Zunheboto consists of six villages namely Sukhai, Ghukhuyi, Nihoshe, Vishepi, Xuyivi and Kivikhu villages, inhabited by the Sumi tribal community of Nagaland. Zunheboto, a landlocked district ofNagaland boasts of a regular biodiversity listing of 222 species, 31 reptiles, 11 amphibians, 200 species of butterflies and more than 200 species of moths. This appx 4000 ha of the forest land is being supported by the local organization formed in agreement with the 6 villages called the Tizu Valley Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Network (TVBCLN). Their efforts since 2016 including hunting and fishing ban and logging ban, has recently resulted in the return of the mighty Western Hoolock Gibbon as spotted and reported by the local villagers and the Network. In an effort to sustain the conservation work the TVBCLN also initiated alternative livelihood opportunities such as eco-tourism and forest produce value chain development.
